Higher Level (HL):

Same as SL, plus:The Contemporary Music Maker (30%): A real-world collaborative project (external).

Scoring a 7 in IB Music requires excellence in creativity, technical skill, and reflective writing. About 7–10% of HL and 10–12% of SL students achieve a 7. Focused feedback and structured portfolio planning are key to reaching this goal.

IB Music encourages students to explore music from multiple cultural, historical, and practical perspectives.

Core areas include:

Exploring Music in Context: Investigating diverse musical cultures and styles through global music examples.

Experimenting with Music: Developing creative ideas and technical skills through musical experimentation.

Presenting Music: Preparing finished pieces, including performance and composition.

The Contemporary Music Maker (HL only): A collaborative project developing original music as a creator and performer.

Students study music through listening, analysis, and practical engagement with diverse styles and traditions.

The Internal Assessment is the “Presenting Music” portfolio. SL students submit recordings and program notes for creating and performing pieces. HL students additionally submit a collaborative project. The IA contributes 50% of the SL and 40% of the HL final grade.Our tutors help with composition, refining performances, and articulating musical intentions clearly in supporting texts.

Tutoring includes regular feedback on compositions, guidance for performance development, and help with writing tasks for each portfolio component. Tutors also provide analysis training and assist with preparing the collaborative project at HL. Sessions are tailored to musical goals and course demands.

Tutors support students in refining musical technique, deepening analysis, and producing portfolio components. They help with composition, performance critique, and contextual writing. Tutoring strengthens both the creative and academic sides of the course, preparing students for conservatory or university music studies.

IB Music requires both creative and analytical abilities. Students must compose, perform, and write critically about music. It’s a unique challenge that suits those with strong musical interest and discipline in managing creative tasks and academic analysis.
